Information

Recently, a White Paper named An Overview of the Status of Nanoscience and Technology Development in China was issued by China National Centre for Nanoscience and other institutions, indicating that China ranks first in filing applications for Nano patents.

The statistics show that China has filed 209,344 applications for Nano patents over the past two decades, accounting for approximately 45% of the global application in this area and doubling that of America over the same period. China’s corporations and institutions ranking top ten globally in terms of Nano patent filing include Hon Hai Precision Industry, Zhejiang University, Tsinghua University and Tianjin University.

Meanwhile, according to the White Paper, applications from Chinese applicants are mainly filed in China, while the number of patent applications filed abroad is still small, accounting for merely 2.61% of the applications filed by China over the past 20 years. However, in the U.S., the figure reaches 50%. In some European countries, such as the U.K. and France, over 70% of the applications of Nano patents were filed by non-natives.

The White Paper indicates the wide coverage of China’s Nano patents, most of which cover polymer synthesis and supermolecular compound patents. Compared with China, countries, such as the U.S., Japan and South Korea, mainly apply patents on semiconductor devices and electronic products in this area. The U.S. filed the most applications of patents on semiconductor devices in the world.

The White Paper also points out that the rapid increase in scientific research outputs and patent applications depicts the promising development of China’s Nanoscience. China has tremendous potential in both traditional strengthened disciplines and emerging fields. Experts said that the impact of China’s Nanotechnology on industries is still limited. There is still a gap between Nanoscience and the industrialization of Nanotechnologies. Therefore, more efforts should be devoted to the application research to accelerate the transformation of Nano patents and results, while encouraging more businesses to invest in the research and development of Nanotechnologies.
